Put in the Tape! An Investor Pitch Lesson From Michael Phelps

Rob LynchUncategorized

Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time with a total of 28 medals.

As a teenager, his coach, Bill Bowman, used to tell Phelps to go home and mentally visualize the perfect race. He would tell Phelps to watch the videotape. The mental videotape.

Phelps would visualize jumping off the blocks, executing each stroke, making perfect turns. He visualized the finish and what it would be like to rip off his cap with a victorious cheer.

During practices and meets, Bowman would shout, “Put in the tape!” Phelps would respond by pushing harder.

There’s a great lesson here for entrepreneurs pitching investors.

To deliver the perfect pitch, visualize what it looks like before you deliver it. See yourself walking into the room, starting your presentation, flipping through each slide.

Visualize making each key point. Effortlessly.

Visualize the finish and cheering at the end.

What does that feel like in your body?

Hold on to that feeling.

Put in the tape.

Be Brilliant!
